The Architect of Space
Born in Adria and trained at the University of Venice under Carlo Scarpa, Paolo Piva enjoyed a meteoric career between Italy and Austria. A renowned architect, he brought to furniture the same rigour as to his buildings. His collaboration with major manufacturers such as B&B Italia and Wittmann gave rise to pieces that redefined the domestic landscape of the 1980s.
The Aesthetic: Radical Geometry
The Piva style stands out for its structural approach to design. His creations use empty space as an element in its own right, with metal bases that trace triangular or pyramidal forms. It is a design of lines, tensions and perfect balance.
Materials: Black-lacquered or chromed tubular steel, clear or smoked glass and finely crafted leather.
Icons: The ‘Alanda’ coffee table with its pyramidal base, the ‘Aura’ sofa and the ‘Anda’ bed.
