A self-taught decorator, Jean Royère opened his Paris agency in 1942 and imposed a free, joyful and resolutely nonconformist style. Far from the rigid conventions of his time, he designed organic, sculptural furniture in which whimsy became a true art of living. His work, today among the most sought-after of the 20th century, embodies a relaxed French elegance.

The Aesthetic: Whimsy Under Control

Royère plays with curves, generous volumes and plant motifs to create warm, timeless pieces. From the smallest light fitting to the monumental sofa, every form breathes freedom and gentleness.

Royère's fame quickly crossed borders. He decorated the palaces of the Shah of Iran, King Farouk of Egypt and King Hussein of Jordan, and opened agencies from Cairo to São Paulo, by way of Beirut and Tehran. His name remains synonymous with a joyful, deeply personal luxury.
