PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This exceptional pair of statuettes brilliantly illustrates the golden age of the Brussels faience manufactures at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. At that time, Brussels workshops competed in virtuosity to produce pieces of great finesse, intended for a refined bourgeoisie. Today, it is particularly rare on the art market to find such allegorical child figures—often originally conceived in sets of four to illustrate the Seasons—that have survived the centuries without being separated. Their presence as a complete pair represents a genuine opportunity for enthusiasts and collectors of antique Northern European ceramics.

Standing 24.5 cm tall and resting on square bases measuring 11 cm on each side, these two figures impose themselves by their graceful presence and the quality of their glaze. They feature the milky white and glossy tin glaze so characteristic of the finest Brussels productions, subtly enhanced by a chromatic palette typical of the manufacture. The nuanced green applied to the rocky bases, as well as the delicate touches of manganese (purple) and yellow highlighting the flowers and drapery, testify to a perfect mastery of high-fire colors. Every detail, from the expressive faces to the chubby modeling, conveys that singular charm—both naive and highly elegant—specific to Belgian faience of this period.

Offered in good antique condition, this pair shows minor fritting and slight glaze flakes (notably on the edges of the bases). These tiny traces of time, inherent and completely normal for faience over two centuries old, guarantee their absolute authenticity. These rare sculptures will provide a touch of poetic and historical elegance, ideal for gracing a fireplace mantel, a fine commode, or enriching a display cabinet collection.
