PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This pair of andirons represents a confident and spare approach to modernist metalwork design, most likely produced in France during the mid-twentieth century. Each piece is constructed in matte black cast iron and wrought iron, combining the heft and density of cast work with the linear precision of forged elements. The overall form is architectural in its clarity: a vertical upright of stepped, rectangular profile rises from a three-pronged base, its silhouette carrying the taut geometry associated with the best French industrial design of the postwar decades.
The most striking element is the finial, a bold open ring or horseshoe form that crowns each upright. This C-shaped arc, set in the plane of the fireplace, reads simultaneously as a functional grip and as a purely sculptural gesture. It recalls motifs found in contemporaneous ironwork by designers influenced by the Arts and Crafts tradition refracted through modernism, where the circle — complete or interrupted — served as an emblem of craft and structural honesty. The finial gives the pair an almost totemic presence, asserting itself strongly against the fireplace surround.
The tripod base construction, with two short forward feet and a single extended log bar projecting to the rear, ensures both stability on the hearth and elegant visual lightness. The transition from the base to the upright is handled with economy: no unnecessary ornament interrupts the clean vertical line. The stepped profile of the shaft adds subtle visual interest and a faint reminiscence of the Art Deco vocabulary, suggesting a designer working in conscious dialogue with the preceding generation while fully committed to mid-century restraint.
In very good condition consistent with age and use, retaining their original matte black surface with natural patination. A robust and visually authoritative pair, well suited to both period interiors and contemporary settings that welcome strong sculptural form at the hearth.
