PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
These striking andirons distil the language of mid-century Italian modernism into a form of compelling geometric economy. Each chenet is composed of a slender tapered shaft of polished brass, rising from a splayed base of curved wrought iron legs to terminate in a boldly drawn circular ring of matte black iron. The juxtaposition of the warm, luminous gold of the brass with the austere darkness of the wrought iron is handled with great assurance, creating an object whose visual drama is achieved through the simplest of means.
The construction is as refined as the design. The brass uprights, slightly tapered and with a smooth drawn finish, are anchored into curved legs that sweep outward in a graceful arc, providing stability while echoing the circular motif of the finial above. The ring itself — a perfect, unornamented circle bisected by the rising shaft — reads simultaneously as a functional handle and as a piece of abstract sculpture, a quality of ambiguity entirely characteristic of the best Italian design of the period.
In their formal vocabulary — geometric precision, the dialogue between industrial and precious materials, the abolition of historical ornament — these andirons recall the work of the great Italian metalworkers of the postwar decades, from Gio Ponti's circle to the workshops of Florence and Milan that produced so many defining objects of the 1950s. The ring finial in particular, with its almost architectural quality, speaks to a design intelligence equally at home in furniture, lighting and the decorative arts.
In very good vintage condition, the brass retaining its warm golden tone and the wrought iron its deep matte finish, this pair of andirons is an object of genuine distinction — a piece that would bring both warmth and modernity to any fireplace of ambition.
