PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
These magnificent bronze andirons are among the most characteristic expressions of the Empire decorative style applied to the fireplace. Each chenet presents a recumbent lion in the round, modelled with care for the anatomy and nobility of the king of beasts — head raised, forepaws extended, tail curling along the haunches — resting upon a rectangular plinth that forms the principal decorative element of the piece. The lion couchant was one of the favoured motifs of the Napoleonic Empire, a symbol simultaneously of sovereign power, military virtue and the classical heritage that Napoleon sought to emulate.
The plinth is richly cast and chased with classical ornament — meander friezes, rosettes and laurel borders — the surface animated with the characteristic precision of the best French bronze foundry work of the early 19th century. Four paw feet support the structure from below, completing the leonine iconography and continuing the animal motif into the base in a manner that demonstrates the period's characteristic integration of figural and architectural decoration.
The gilded bronze surface, its warm golden-amber tone deepened by a century and a half of natural patination, shows the complex relationship between applied gilding and organic discolouration that gives antique bronze its incomparable depth. The recessed ornament retains its darker ground while the raised surfaces glow with reflected light — a contrast that renders even the most static composition alive with movement.
Measuring 27 cm wide, 46 cm deep and 23.5 cm tall, this pair is well proportioned for a medium to large fireplace. Dating to around 1850, they represent the high point of French Empire bronze-casting in fireplace accessories — objects produced in the finest Paris foundries and intended from their inception as permanent features of a great room. An exceptional and authoritative pair.
