PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The ironsmith’s art recognises, in the two fundamental forms of ferrous metal — cast iron and wrought iron — materials of fundamentally different character, each with its own processes, its own surface qualities, and its own formal possibilities. Cast iron, produced by pouring molten metal into a mould, achieves forms of great precision but retains the slightly rough, granular texture of the casting; wrought iron, worked under heat by the hammer on the anvil, is uniquely responsive to the craftsman’s hand, capable of being drawn out, twisted, and articulated with an immediacy that no moulding process can replicate. The decision to employ both in a single object is a considered one, engaging the viewer in a conversation between two distinct but related metallic identities.
This distinctive pair of andirons, French work of circa 1970, makes precisely that dialogue its central formal conceit. The combination of cast iron — with its mass and density, its slightly textured surface, its sense of solidity — and wrought iron — with its characteristic directness of form, its hammer-worked surfaces, its linear energy — creates a composition of considerable visual interest, each material revealing its nature more fully in contrast with the other. At 19.5 centimetres wide and 40.5 centimetres tall, the andirons have proportions of considered compactness, suited to a fireplace of domestic dimensions.
The 1970s were, in France, a period of renewed engagement with artisanal traditions in the applied arts, a reaction against the anonymity of mass production that found expression in craftsmen who brought a fresh contemporary sensibility to ancient materials and techniques. These andirons, in their choice of traditional ferrous metals combined with modernist formal restraint, are characteristic of that moment.
Presented in very good condition consistent with their age, with both irons showing a natural dark patina, this pair of cast iron and wrought iron andirons is an object of both material and formal interest. Dimensions per andiron: 19.5 × 42.5 × 40.5 cm.
