PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The 1960s and 1970s marked Italy’s undisputed ascendancy in the field of international design — a dominance so complete that the expression “Italian design” came to function, in those decades, almost as a synonym for design itself. Drawing on a manufacturing tradition of exceptional depth, from the metalworking ateliers of Tuscany to the furniture workshops of the Brianza, Italian craftsmen and designers succeeded in translating the formal ambitions of European modernism into objects of extraordinary material quality and cultural appeal. Among the metals that defined this moment, brass held a particularly privileged position: warm, lustrous, and possessed of an innate refinement that aluminium and steel could not replicate, it became the material of choice for a generation of designers intent on producing modern objects that were, above all, beautiful.
This fine pair of andirons, Italian work of circa 1970, is a characteristic expression of that aesthetic. Executed entirely in brass with the clarity and discipline of the period’s best decorative metalwork, each piece presents a modernist composition of clean geometric forms — the horizontal bar and vertical upright resolved into a coherent sculptural unity. At 15 centimetres wide and 35 centimetres tall, they have the compact authority of objects designed with precision: nothing in excess, nothing lacking.
The near-square proportions of these andirons — 34 centimetres deep, 35 centimetres tall — give them a particular visual equilibrium, each piece presenting an almost architectural profile that reads clearly from multiple angles. The natural lustre of the brass, developed over decades into a warm, complex patina, transforms under the light of a fire into something approaching the alchemical: the metal becomes animate, shifting from gold to copper to amber as the flames move.
Presented in very good condition consistent with their age, this pair of brass andirons would integrate with equal facility into a period interior of the 1960s or 1970s or into a contemporary setting seeking an accent of genuine craft quality. Sold as a pair. Dimensions per andiron: 15 × 34 × 35 cm.
