PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A distinguished pair of modernist andirons in a sophisticated combination of polished steel, polished brass, and hand-forged wrought iron — three metals whose contrasting tones and surface qualities create a composition of great material richness and formal elegance. The steel and brass elements bring cool and warm metallic luminosity to the piece, while the wrought iron provides the structural weight and dark gravity of the traditional blacksmith's art. The overall design is at once architecturally precise and sculpturally compelling. French work in the style of Jacques Adnet, circa 1940.
These andirons are executed in the manner of Jacques Adnet (1900–1984), the celebrated director of the Compagnie des Arts Français (1928–1959) and one of the defining figures of French modernist design. Adnet's hallmark was his mastery of combining materials — leather and brass, steel and iron, chrome and wood — in compositions whose authority derived precisely from the quality of the dialogue between their contrasting textures and tones. In hearth accessories as in furniture, this multi-material approach produced objects of singular distinction, where the interplay between polished and matte, warm and cool, heavy and light created visual complexity from formal simplicity.
This pair of andirons brings refined material complexity to any fireplace. The three-metal composition responds dynamically to different lighting conditions — the steel and brass catching and reflecting the light of the fire while the wrought iron absorbs it — creating a constantly shifting quality of surface as the flames animate the hearth. Suited with equal distinction to modernist apartments, classical interiors, and contemporary spaces, these andirons represent a high point of the French post-war decorative metalwork tradition, as vital and beautiful today as when they were made.
