PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

A refined pair of modernist andirons in hand-forged wrought iron, their elegant abstract form representative of the finest French blacksmithing of the post-war period. The clean, sculptural silhouette — combining vertical uprights with precisely worked horizontal elements — reflects the formal discipline and material honesty that characterised the best French decorative ironwork of the 1940s and 1950s. The dark, matte surface of the forged iron develops a subtle patina with age and firelight, lending each piece a quiet depth and physical presence. French work in the style of Jacques Adnet, circa 1950.

These andirons are executed in the manner of Jacques Adnet (1900–1984), one of the most celebrated figures of French modernist design. While best known for his pioneering use of leather and brass in furniture and accessories as director of the Compagnie des Arts Français (1928–1959), Adnet was equally a significant designer of metal objects and hearth accessories, applying the same rigorous formal discipline to wrought iron as to his other materials. His vision of French modernism — at once functional, beautiful, and profoundly rooted in craft tradition — found natural expression in objects as elemental and ancient as the andiron, where the simplicity of the form allowed the quality of the metalwork and the authority of the design to speak without ornamental distraction.

This pair of andirons is suited to fireplaces of widely varying character: from a classical stone or marble chimneypiece to the rendered surround of a modernist apartment. Their clean, abstract forms hold their own at the scale of a generous hearth while remaining refined enough for a more intimate fireplace. The dark forged iron surface pairs naturally with leather upholstery, dark wood furniture, and natural stone, and contrasts handsomely with the warm brass or gilt metal of a more decorated mantelpiece. A pair of enduring quality and genuine design authority.
