PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This exceptional pair of andirons is cast in bronze and worked in wrought iron in the spirit of the Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts movements, each chenet taking the form of an ermine tail — one of the most distinctive heraldic symbols in French history, closely associated with the ancient Duchy of Brittany. The sinuous, organic form of the ermine tail lends itself naturally to the flowing vocabulary of the Art Nouveau aesthetic, while the combination of cast bronze and hand-forged iron demonstrates the exceptional mastery of materials characteristic of the best French metalwork of the turn of the twentieth century.
Each andiron bears the maker's signature in low relief, comprising the monogram "MR" accompanied by the effigy of an ermine — a double reference to the heraldic beast. This Breton heraldic symbol, which appears on the coat of arms of Brittany and carries associations of purity, nobility and regional pride, was a recurring motif in the decorative arts of late nineteenth-century France, where regional identity and artisanal traditions were celebrated as an alternative to the dominant Parisian aesthetic. The inclusion of the maker's mark in such a prominent position speaks to the artistic ambition and pride of craft of this talented bronzier.
These andirons are exceptional objects: rare, beautifully made, and charged with historical and heraldic significance. They would provide a focal point of artistic interest for any fireplace, their Art Nouveau silhouettes and ermine motifs making them objects of contemplation as much as function. An outstanding pair for the collector of exceptional French decorative metalwork from the belle époque.
