PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This pair of wrought iron andirons is fully imbued with the spirit of the Arts & Crafts movement, the artistic current born in Great Britain in the late nineteenth century whose influence was felt in France well into the 1930s. Each andiron presents a simple, robust form with honest lines that celebrate the beauty of hand-worked metal, according to the movement's founding principles: the rejection of superfluous ornament, the valorisation of authentic craftsmanship, and a return to natural and noble materials. The black patina of the wrought iron, acquired over the years, lends the ensemble a sober and luminous presence.
The Arts & Crafts movement, founded on the theories of John Ruskin and embodied by William Morris in England, called from the 1860s onwards for a return to craftsmanship in the face of industrial excess. In ironwork, this movement translated into pieces of sober geometric form, with visible assembly, that valued the care of workmanship over the richness of ornament. These andirons, characteristic of this vocabulary, testify to the persistence of these ideals well beyond their British origins.
This pair of andirons presents in fine overall condition. Their sober and timeless design makes them compatible with many interior styles — from rustic decoration to pared-down contemporary interiors. They will find their natural place before a fireplace, fulfilling their primary function while offering a remarkable decorative presence.
