PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Each andiron of this expressive pair rises from a tripod base of curved and scrolled legs to a slender wrought iron upright crowned by an open loop finial — a motif suggestive of an abstracted figure with arms raised or a plant tendril reaching skyward. The organic fluidity of the ironwork, with its hand-forged undulations and tapering lines, reflects the biomorphic vocabulary that distinguished the best French decorative metalwork of the 1930s and 1940s.

The attribution to the style of Jean Royère — the inventive French designer celebrated for his fantaisiste interiors and exuberantly organic forms — speaks to the andirons’ confident departure from conventional fireplace design. Royère and his contemporaries reinvented every element of the domestic interior, and the hearth accessories they produced share the same animated, almost living quality present in these uprights.

The wrought iron has developed a rich dark patina over its eight decades, lending the metal a depth and texture that complements the sculptural vigour of the design. Andirons of this type, conceived as much as objects of artistic contemplation as functional fireside implements, are keenly sought by collectors of French mid-century decorative arts.
