Pair of Modernist Wrought Iron Ring-Finial Andirons in the Style of Gilbert Poillerat

This superb pair of wrought iron andirons exemplifies the rigorous geometric modernism of which Gilbert Poillerat was the foremost champion among French decorative ironworkers of the mid-20th century. The design is built around the circle—a form central to Poillerat’s aesthetic vocabulary—realised here as a bold, studded ring finial that crowns each andiron with commanding authority. The ring is encrusted around its entire circumference with small riveted bosses, adding decorative richness that catches and reflects the light of an open fire.

Below the ring, a stepped central shaft descends to a base of striking architectonic character: four squared, spreading feet linked by horizontal bars create a stable, symmetrical plinth that combines the vocabulary of medieval ironwork with a thoroughly modernist sensibility.
