PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
An unusual and inventive pair of Mid-Century Modern andirons, combining cast iron and wrought iron in a design centred on a witty trompe-l’œil reference to the belt buckle. The upper section of each andiron is dominated by a cast iron form closely resembling a buckle: a rectangular plaque with notched lateral slots that evoke belt loops and a central prong, executed with a confident sculptural sureness.
Below the buckle element, the wrought iron shaft descends to a base of decorative volute scrolls, the feet curling outward in a manner reminiscent of traditional French andiron design, here given a restrained modernist refinement. Rear log-support spurs extend horizontally to the back, fulfilling the functional requirements of the piece without sacrificing its decorative character.
The combination of materials—heavy cast iron for the figural element, worked iron for the structural frame—is characteristic of French craft production of the post-war decades, when designer-blacksmiths experimented freely with hybrid techniques and whimsical figurative forms. The result is a piece of some originality: functional, decorative, and touched with the self-conscious humour that marks the best French design of the period.
A charming and collectible pair in good overall condition, bringing both personality and craftsmanship to any fireplace setting.
