PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
At nearly sixty centimetres in height, this pair of wrought iron andirons makes a statement of considerable authority. Each piece is built on a slender tapering shaft — almost columnar in its verticality — that rises from a base of four equally splayed feet disposed in a radial cross form, grounding the composition with a classic heraldic stability. This four-footed base is itself an architectural form of great antiquity, recalling the stands of medieval iron torchères and the decorative ironwork of Gothic ecclesiastical interiors.
The crowning element is a large, boldly formed fleur-de-lys — the quintessential emblem of French heraldry — executed with striking confidence and precision. The three petals of the lily splay outward with a clean, assured gesture, flanked by the characteristic lateral scrolls of the classic fleur-de-lys form. In blackened iron, the silhouette reads with exceptional graphic clarity: these finials are among the most recognisably and proudly French ornamental motifs in the entire repertoire of decorative ironwork.
The pair is accompanied by a connecting log-rest bar that links the two andirons and completes the functional hearth ensemble. At 48.5 cm in depth, the running bars are generous, well suited to supporting substantial firewood, and the overall construction is robust and thoroughly made.
These are andirons of genuine scale and presence, appropriate to a large stone chimney breast in a manoir, château, or formal country house. Their combination of heraldic symbolism, architectural proportion and high-quality ironwork situates them among the most distinguished of French decorative fireplace objects — pieces that speak of history, craft and national identity in equal measure.
