PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This well-matched pair of andirons exemplifies the sophisticated dialogue between polished brass and black wrought iron that became one of the defining material pairings of postwar French decorative metalwork. Each piece comprises a vertical square-section iron upright terminating in a large polished brass ball finial, articulated at mid-height with a substantial brass ring — the whole supported on two boldly curved arched iron feet. The resulting silhouette is at once bold and refined, the contrast between matte black iron and gleaming brass providing a visual tension of characteristic elegance.
The combination of black iron uprights, spherical brass finials and circular brass rings is closely associated with the work of Jacques Adnet (1900–1984), the celebrated French decorator and designer who headed the Compagnie des Arts Français from 1928 and became one of the most influential voices in postwar French interior design. Adnet’s signature aesthetic — spare, geometric, underpinned by a classical sense of proportion — is strongly evoked by these andirons, though they are attributed as work produced in his manner rather than under his direct authorship.
The ball-and-ring composition at the head of each upright is particularly characteristic: the ring, of burnished brass with a satisfying weight, is mounted at mid-shaft, while the ball finial above completes the vertical with a note of confident simplicity. The arched foot bases, shaped in flat wrought iron bent into a double curve, provide a stable and elegant support, their silhouette echoing the clean arcs of the Directoire and Restoration periods whilst remaining thoroughly modernist in spirit.
In very good overall condition, with the black iron retaining its original matte finish and the polished brass showing a warm, even patina consistent with age and careful use. A distinguished pair of andirons that will serve both as functional hearthside accessories and as works of decorative metalwork in their own right, particularly suited to an interior in the French modernist tradition.
