PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
These andirons achieve an effect of considerable elegance through the simplest of means: a cage of curved iron bars, crossing to form an oval lattice body, crowned by a large polished brass ball and raised on a swept crescent foot. The composition is resolved with the assurance of a trained designer: the warm gold of the brass ball plays against the blackened iron of the cage below, the smooth sphere contrasting with the linear complexity of the lattice, and the generous spread of the crescent base providing a satisfying visual anchor for the vertical element above.
The oval cage form — a recurring motif in French modernist metalwork of the mid-twentieth century — functions simultaneously as a decorative upright and as a structural element, its interlaced bars providing rigidity while maintaining a visual lightness that prevents the piece from appearing heavy or ponderous. The polished brass ball, a signature accent of French modernist fireplace furniture from the 1950s through the 1970s, requires no elaboration: its reflective surface catches and diffuses the light of the fire in an ever-shifting play of gold and amber that animates the hearth even when no fire is lit.
Forged in blackened wrought iron with a brass ball finish in good condition, the pair demonstrates the quality of workshop production available to the French consumer of fine decorative accessories in the early 1970s. The swept crescent feet are particularly well-resolved, their arching profile recalling both the classical crescent and the modernist preoccupation with flowing, dynamic line.
Refined in scale at 36.5 cm high, this pair would be well-suited to a fireplace of moderate proportions — a period bedroom chimney, a town apartment salon, or any interior that prizes the combination of decorative wit and functional precision that marks the best French midcentury craft production.
