PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This impressive set of four armchairs, produced by the celebrated German house Rosenthal circa 1970, represents the confident modernism that characterised German design at its most ambitious in the postwar decades. Rosenthal, long established as one of Germany’s preeminent luxury manufacturers, expanded its creative vision in the 1960s through its Studio-Haus concept, commissioning leading international designers to create furniture and objects that united industrial precision with genuine aesthetic daring.
Each chair is constructed around a frame of black lacquered metal, its rectilinear geometry softened by generous leather upholstery. The seat and back are padded in smooth leather—firm yet comfortable—while the caster wheels at the base of each leg lend the chairs a practical versatility, allowing easy repositioning without sacrificing formal elegance. The overall silhouette is one of controlled tension: angular and architectural, yet inviting in its proportions.
The combination of black lacquer and leather reflects the restrained palette favoured by the most forward-thinking German designers of the period—a deliberate rejection of ornament in favour of material quality and structural clarity. Such ensembles were designed for the modern boardroom, the architect’s study, or the collector’s reception room: spaces where design was understood as a statement of cultural seriousness.
A rare and coherent set of four, in excellent original condition. W. 56 × D. 65 × H. 78 cm each.
