PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This woven wire decanting basket is a fine example of the silversmith's craft applied to one of the most considered accessories of the French table. The piece is constructed entirely from fine silver-plated wire, woven in a dense, regular mesh that gives the body both structural strength and decorative delicacy. The elongated oval form is designed to cradle a wine bottle at a permanent incline — the defining feature of the panier décanteur — ensuring that aged wines with significant sediment can be brought from cellar to table and poured without disturbance.
The arched wire handle rises from the two narrow ends of the basket, forming a graceful arc that allows the piece to be carried easily. The craftsmanship of the woven mesh body is considerable: each strand of wire is carefully woven through its neighbours in a pattern that maintains regularity across the curved surface, a task requiring a skilled hand and patient attention. The silver plating gives the whole a subtle sheen that catches light along the basket's many facets.
Objects of this kind — wine cradles, decanting baskets, paniers à bouteilles — were indispensable accessories on the well-appointed tables of bourgeois and aristocratic France from the late 19th century onward. Their function was as much theatrical as practical: the sight of a fine old Bordeaux or Burgundy presented in a silver basket at a careful angle was a ritual of the table that signalled to guests the value of the wine and the care of its service.
Dating to around 1900 and of French manufacture, this basket is in good condition with the silvering intact. Its proportions make it suited to a standard wine bottle. An elegant and functional piece from the golden age of French table silver.
