PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This imposing wine rack is a distinguished example of the French cave à bouteilles, constructed in dark-stained wood with extensive brass hardware throughout. Three horizontal tiers, each fitted with a series of individual bottle cradles in cast brass, allow bottles to rest at a slight reclined angle, keeping corks moist and the wine in optimal condition. The cradles are mounted on horizontal rails and surmounted by small decorative brass finials, lending each tier an architectural punctuation. A brass gallery runs along the top, the base rests on small turned ball feet, and a small brass plaque on the front panel adds a further note of refinement.
The cave à bouteilles was an essential piece of furniture in the well-appointed French bourgeois interior of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Typically placed on the sideboard or in the dining room, it served to display and store the household wine and spirits collection, its open architecture making bottles immediately visible and accessible while protecting them from disturbance. The combination of rich dark wood with polished brass was the standard palette for such furniture, echoing the cabinetry and metalwork of the period's finest dining room commissions.
The circa 1920 date is consistent with the quality of the joinery and the style of the brass fittings, which draw on a late nineteenth-century tradition while exhibiting the simplification of form characteristic of the transitional period leading into Art Deco. The overall form — rectangular, rectilinear, with carefully composed proportions and a restrained but confident use of metalwork ornament — places this piece firmly within the tradition of French provincial luxury craftsmanship.
In good condition consistent with age. The wood retains its deep patina and the brass fittings are intact throughout. A substantial and decorative piece of functional furniture well suited to a dining room, cellar entrance, or any interior where the pleasures of the table are celebrated.
