PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The leaf-form vide-poche occupies a special place in the history of French studio ceramics — an object of great formal elegance whose apparent simplicity conceals a considerable technical and artistic challenge. To model a leaf convincingly in ceramic is to confront the medium's fundamental resistance to the organic: to achieve the tension of a living surface, the delicacy of a serrated edge, the rhythm of veining, within a material that insists on its own weighty, earthy nature. The finest examples — and this is among them — resolve that tension with a naturalness that seems entirely effortless.

Modelled as an elongated leaf of generous proportions, this piece in warm mustard-yellow glaze presents a surface of exceptional sculptural quality. The central midrib runs the full length of the leaf, prominent and firmly stated, while a network of lateral veins fans outward to either side with the confident irregularity of natural growth. The edges are ruffled and serrated in a manner that captures the kinetic quality of a leaf in air — frozen at the moment when it has just settled. The glaze is a warm, deep mustard-yellow of great richness, its colour shifting subtly in the light as the surface modelling catches and releases the illumination.

The piece carries an incised mark to the underside, identifying it as the work of an established French ceramic studio — precisely the kind of production that furnished the tables and consoles of cultivated French interiors throughout the 1970s.

In good vintage condition with a slight chip to one edge as noted; otherwise intact and fully expressive of its period.
