PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Maison Jansen, the illustrious Paris decorating house founded in 1880 and operating at the highest levels of international interior design throughout the twentieth century, was long synonymous with a refined neoclassical aesthetic — one that drew on the vocabulary of antiquity to produce objects and interiors of timeless elegance. This tall standing ashtray embodies that spirit with considerable eloquence, combining the architectural vocabulary of the classical column with the practical demands of mid-century salon furnishing.
The piece is constructed around a slender twisted shaft in gilt bronze — the twist a subtly dynamic element that prevents the verticality from reading as rigid, while still maintaining the disciplined linearity appropriate to the neoclassical manner. The shaft rises to support at its summit a shallow cup of circular form, its border enriched with decorative relief work in the best Jansen tradition. The overall gilding is warm and even, the quality of the casting consistent with the high standards of French bronzework of the period.
At 69.5 cm, the piece stands comfortably beside a sofa or low armchair — the canonical position for a standing ashtray in the grand interiors of the mid-twentieth century, where such pieces were as much a mark of the decorator's art as the furniture they accompanied. Its slender, vertical silhouette takes up almost no floor space while exercising a considerable visual presence.
In very good vintage condition, the gilding well preserved. A characterful example of the refined French decorative metalwork tradition.
