Neoclassical Standing Ashtray in Bronze and Brass by Maison Baguès, France, circa 1940

Maison Baguès, the celebrated Parisian house founded in the nineteenth century and reaching the height of its prestige in the interwar and post-war decades, was renowned above all for its extraordinary command of gilded metalwork — a mastery deployed across furniture mounts, luminaires, and objets de luxe of every kind. This standing ashtray exemplifies the house's neoclassical manner at its most refined: every element speaks of a workshop tradition in which the grammar of antiquity was absorbed and reinterpreted with consummate fluency.

The piece is constructed as a slender gilt brass column of elegant proportions, rising from a circular base incorporating a glass disc — a Baguès signature detail that lends lightness to what might otherwise be a ponderous form. The column is enriched at mid-height by a decorative boss of cast and chased brasswork, and terminates at its summit in a shallow circular cup whose rim is cast in relief as an elaborate laurel wreath — a motif central to the neoclassical lexicon and one that Baguès employed with consistent virtuosity throughout its production.

The gilded surface is warm and even, the quality of the casting and finishing entirely consistent with Baguès's high standards.
