PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This leaf-form vide-poche in silver-plated metal is a characteristic product of the Gallia division of Christofle, the celebrated French silversmith house established in Paris in 1830 and renowned ever since for the rigour and elegance of its work. The piece takes the form of a deeply concave leaf, the shallow basin modelled with gently rising sides that curve to pointed terminals at either end; at one extremity, a small curved stem serves as a handle, completing the botanical allusion with economy and wit. The entire surface is polished to a high, brilliant lustre throughout.

Gallia, founded in 1895 as Christofle’s mid-range silver-plating brand, was conceived to bring the quality and formal vocabulary of Christofle to a broader market without sacrificing the manufacturing standards for which the house was renowned. Its pieces — typically produced in silver-plated Alpaca, an alloy of copper, zinc, and nickel — combine the decorative ambition of fine silverwork with democratic accessibility. This vide-poche bears Gallia’s characteristic combination of restrained elegance and rigorous finish.

The vide-poche — the small tray placed near the entrance of a room to receive keys, coins, cufflinks, and other personal effects — became an essential element of French bourgeois domestic life during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In silver-plated metal, it offered a functional solution of genuine decorative presence: the polished surface brightened the hall or dressing table, and the formal vocabulary of the leaf communicated a pleasing sense of nature brought indoors. This example, in the leaf form favoured by Gallia during the interwar period, exemplifies the type with particular refinement.

Marked Christofle and Gallia to the underside. The piece is in very good condition, the silver plate presenting a warm, even lustre with no significant losses. Dimensions: 24 × 12.5 × 5 cm.
