PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A charming and refined vide-poche in the form of a swan, the body fashioned from a natural shell and the neck and head sculpted in silvered metal with elegant naturalistic precision. The swan poses with graceful poise, the iridescent warmth of the natural shell forming the basin of the vide-poche while the silvered neck curves with aristocratic elegance. A delightful example of the small decorative bibelots de bureau that the finest French ateliers of the 1940s produced with unmatched artistry and wit. Attributed to Maison Jansen, circa 1940.
The swan was a particularly favoured motif in neoclassical and Empire decoration, intimately associated with the Empress Joséphine and the French passion for mythological and naturalistic symbolism. The great decorating houses of the 20th century, Maison Jansen foremost among them, revived this emblematic motif with characteristic Parisian refinement, deploying it in small bibelots, lamp bases, and decorative accessories that combined natural materials with the finest silversmithing and bronze-working. At Jansen — the legendary firm founded in 1880 on the rue Royale and brought to the peak of its prestige by Stéphane Boudin — no detail was too small to merit the same standard of quality and invention as the grandest commission.
The vide-poche — literally "empty pocket" — is one of the most intimate and revealing objects in a French interior. Placed on a writing desk, a dressing table, or a console, it reflects the taste and discernment of its owner more directly than any larger piece of furniture. This swan vide-poche is an object of quiet perfection: functional, beautiful, and charged with the narrative of French decorative mythology. It would make a particularly treasured gift and a memorable addition to any collection of French decorative arts of the mid-20th century.
