PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

These two Carrara marble mortars bear witness to the art of living and the refinement of domestic arts in the 18th century. Carrara marble — quarried in the Tuscan hills since Antiquity and made famous by Michelangelo's masterpieces — is here fashioned into mortars with a slightly flared cylindrical body, of great formal sobriety. Its grey-white veined tone, density, and resistance have made it the material of choice for this use for centuries.

The marble mortar was an indispensable utensil in the kitchens and dispensaries of great 18th-century households, serving to grind spices, medicinal herbs, pigments, and culinary ingredients alike. These examples, presented with their original pestles, form a coherent and rare ensemble, bearing witness to high-quality aristocratic or bourgeois domestic life.

18th century. Beautiful natural marble patina. A collector's object as much as a practical one, of remarkable decorative presence.
