PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This two-light candlestick is wrought from iron and fashioned in the form of a swan, its graceful neck forming the central support while outstretched wings serve as the arms bearing the candle cups. The blackened iron has been worked with skill, the sinuous lines of the bird rendered with expressiveness — beak raised, plumage suggested by chiselled detailing. A charming and spirited piece of French craftsmanship, both sculptural and functional.
The swan has held an enduring place in French decorative arts, appearing across centuries as a symbol of grace, purity, and noble elegance. It featured prominently in the Empire style under Napoleon I, who adopted the swan as one of his personal emblems, and continued as a beloved motif in wrought iron work throughout the nineteenth and into the twentieth century. By the mid-twentieth century, skilled French ferroniers perpetuated this tradition, creating candlesticks, andirons, and decorative pieces in which the swan's form was rendered with both naturalism and ornamental flair.
A candlestick such as this would bring sculptural character to a fireplace mantel, a console, or a dining table arrangement. Its dark iron surface complements stone, natural wood, and aged patinas, and would integrate beautifully into an interior drawing on classical French references or on the decorative spirit of the 1940s and 1950s.
