PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Few objects on the well-appointed table carry as much ceremonial weight as the champagne bucket — a vessel whose form has remained essentially constant since the nineteenth century, and one whose quality of execution speaks directly to the standard of hospitality it serves. This handsome pair, executed in silver-plated metal with a bright finish of evident quality, belongs to the distinguished tradition of French silver-plating that flourished throughout the twentieth century in the workshops of Paris and its surrounds.
Each bucket takes the canonical cylindrical form, tapering very slightly from a generously proportioned rim to a slightly narrower foot. The rims are cleanly moulded, and the handles are composed of linked chain drops — a classic detail of aristocratic silver design — terminating in cast lion-mask mounts that fasten to the body with decorative bosses. The lion mask is among the oldest and most venerable of ornamental motifs in the Western decorative tradition, signifying strength, nobility and authority; its employment here places these buckets firmly within the grand tradition of French silversmithing.
Presented as a matched pair, the buckets are both fully functional and highly decorative, suited equally to the grandest table settings and to permanent display. Each comfortably accommodates a standard bottle of champagne with ice, while the paired presentation lends them a particular visual authority.
The silver plate is bright and well preserved, with only the gentle patina of age contributing to their character. A distinguished pair, eminently usable and equally suitable as decorative objects.
