PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

A remarkable and imposing eight-arm foliage chandelier in painted sheet metal, its arms and canopy luxuriantly decorated with modelled leaves and blossoms in polychrome porcelain. The tôle peinte branches radiate outward in naturalistic curves, supporting individual candle lights, while the porcelain flowers — hand-painted in soft whites, pinks, and creams — add a delicate botanical realism to the piece. The overall composition evokes the dense floral garlands associated with the great tradition of French ornamental art.

The tradition of tôle peinte — painted and lacquered sheet metal fashioned into decorative objects — flourished in France from the 18th century onwards, particularly in the workshops of Paris and the provinces. In the 20th century, the production of floral chandeliers in tôle and porcelain became a speciality of numerous French ateliers, responding to a persistent demand from country houses, châteaux, and Parisian apartments for luminaires combining naturalistic charm with refined craftsmanship. The porcelain flowers used in such chandeliers were frequently sourced from the celebrated ceramic centres of Limoges or from the small faïenceries active throughout the Île-de-France.

With its eight arms of light and its abundant floral and foliar decoration, this chandelier is a piece of impressive scale and visual richness. It would provide a magnificent focal point in a dining room, entrance hall, or salon of generous proportions, casting a warm, diffused light that animates the painted and modelled surfaces.
