PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Executed at the height of the Belle Époque's passionate love affair with the decorative arts of the Ancien Régime, this crystal and bronze chandelier in the Louis XVI manner represents the finest tradition of French historicist craftsmanship at the turn of the twentieth century. The bronze armature — its branches curving with the graceful neoclassical fluency that characterised the original models of the 1770s and 1780s — bears a cascade of crystal drops, pendants, and garlands whose prismatic brilliance transforms any room it inhabits into a space of extraordinary luminosity. The total effect, when the chandelier is illuminated, is that of a suspended constellation: light multiplied and scattered through a thousand crystalline facets into a dance that no other decorative form can replicate.

The Louis XVI style — that summit of French decorative elegance in the last decades of the Bourbon monarchy — experienced one of its most fertile revivals in the years surrounding 1900, when the artisans and bronziers of Paris brought to its reproduction the full resources of industrial-era manufacturing combined with the irreplaceable legacy of hand-finishing traditions that had been maintained without interruption since the eighteenth century. Chandeliers of this type — with their combination of cast and chased bronze and hand-cut crystal — were produced for the grandest private hôtels, the finest hotels and restaurants, and the most ambitious private commissions of an era that shared with Louis XVI's court a taste for luminous, crystalline magnificence.

In excellent condition, with the bronze retaining its warm gilt and the crystal elements complete and sparkling, this chandelier would impose its magnificent presence in any room of appropriate scale: a grand dining room, a salon of ceremony, or an entrance hall of classical ambition. A piece of enduring beauty and historical significance.
