PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Imposing yet elegant, this eight-arm chandelier in patinated bronze and cut crystal represents one of the most accomplished expressions of the French Louis XV revival as practised by the skilled bronziers of the Belle Époque. Eight sweeping scrolled arms radiate from the central body in the characteristic rococo manner, each bearing a candle cup and canopy richly dressed with faceted crystal drops and pendant chains. The overall diameter of 61 cm affords the fixture a commanding horizontal presence, while the complementary height of 74 cm ensures an elegant vertical proportion — together creating a luminous statement suited to a room of genuine character.

The eight-arm format held particular prestige in the French chandelier-making tradition, being associated from the seventeenth century onward with the most important rooms of great houses. While smaller numbers of lights were considered appropriate for private apartments and intimate dining rooms, eight and twelve-arm chandeliers were the benchmark of the principal salon or salle de compagnie. By the turn of the twentieth century, the great Paris ateliers were producing such chandeliers in quantity for an affluent international clientele, their crystal components sourced from the finest French and Bohemian manufacturers and individually hand-mounted to maximise the play of light. The combination of patinated bronze armature and brilliant-cut crystal drops was the defining formula for prestigious French lighting through a century and a half of decorative art.

This example retains its original assemblage of crystal pendants in very good condition, the drops sparkling with their characteristic prismatic brilliance. The warm tone of the patinated bronze armature offers an ideal counterpoint to the cold clarity of the crystal, a pairing that has never fallen from favour with collectors and decorators of historical interiors. The balance of proportions and quality of casting make this an exemplary piece from the finest period of French period-revival bronzework, suited to any interior seeking the grandeur of the French classical decorative tradition.
