PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The round table has occupied a privileged place in French interior culture since the eighteenth century. More intimate in character than its rectangular counterpart, it organises a group of chairs or fauteuils into a circle — a conversation piece in the most literal sense — and places each object upon it at an equal distance from every seat. The guéridon, the round side table, the drum table: these circular forms carried in the French interior a social charge that the rectangular table, more formal and hierarchical, could never quite achieve.

This round coffee table, in brass and mahogany veneer and attributed to Maison Jansen, dating from around 1940, transposes that tradition into the vocabulary of the low table. The brass base — worked in the neoclassical idiom with the precise architectural detailing characteristic of Jansen — supports a mahogany veneer top whose warm, figured grain introduces an organic note against the metallic structure beneath. This pairing of brass and mahogany was one of the most refined signatures of the Jansen atelier: it carried the memory of the Empire ormolu-mounted mahogany that Jansen had been producing and restoring since the nineteenth century, while remaining thoroughly of its own mid-twentieth-century moment.

At 60.5 cm in diameter and 44 cm tall, the table is a refined and versatile object — low enough to serve before a sofa, compact enough for a smaller sitting room, and formal enough to stand beside an armchair as a reading or lamp table. The circular profile eliminates awkward corners and allows easy movement around it from every direction.

In very good condition consistent with its age. A distinguished piece from one of the golden periods of the Jansen atelier, when the workshop's mastery of the brass-and-mahogany pairing was at its height.
