PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This exquisite coffee table in patinated bronze is executed in the faux-bamboo manner, one of the most coveted and characteristic specialities of the Parisian house Maison Baguès. The sinuous bronze tubes, masterfully wrought to simulate the nodes and internodes of natural bamboo, support a top of églomisé gilt glass — an ancient decorative technique in which gold leaf is applied to the reverse of glass and protected by a backing, creating a surface of luminous, warm gold that transforms the table into an object of almost jewel-like richness. The glass top presents slight surface wear consistent with its age, which attests to its authenticity and does not diminish its exceptional decorative quality.
Maison Baguès, founded in 1840 on the Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris, was one of the most celebrated French houses for decorative bronze and brass objects, renowned above all for its virtuosic naturalistic metalwork. The faux-bamboo technique — imitating organic bamboo in cast or wrought bronze — was a house speciality that combined a chinoiserie-inflected exoticism with the highest standards of Parisian craftsmanship. The use of églomisé glass — a technique with roots in classical antiquity, revived in the eighteenth century and beloved by the Art Déco period — as a tabletop was a particularly luxurious touch, combining two of the period's most coveted decorative materials in a single object of great rarity.
This coffee table would be an enchanting centrepiece for any salon or boudoir, where its faux-bamboo structure brings a note of naturalist fantasy and the églomisé gilt glass top adds an almost theatrical note of golden luxury. A truly exceptional piece of French decorative art, bearing the hallmarks of the Maison Baguès's great tradition and the unique allure of the églomisé technique at its most intimate and refined.
