PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A coffee table of exceptional decorative refinement, this elegant piece by Maison Baguès is constructed in bronze fashioned in the faux-bamboo manner — the metal rods cast to evoke the internodal sections and tapering joints of natural bamboo canes with meticulous naturalistic precision. The warm patina of the bronze animates the delicate bamboo-like structure with a living quality, while the top is finished in églomisé mirror — its surface worked with gold or silver leaf beneath the glass, giving it the atmospheric, antiqued reflection characteristic of this highly prized decorative technique.
Maison Baguès, founded on the Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris in 1840, was the most celebrated Parisian bronzier of the 19th and early 20th centuries, specialising in luxury lighting and decorative bronzes of extraordinary quality. The house made the faux-bamboo repertoire distinctly its own, producing luminaires, table lamps, girandoles, mirrors and occasional furniture in this idiom that were coveted by the most distinguished collectors and decorators of the Belle Époque and the interwar years. Baguès pieces — recognisable by their exceptional casting quality and the refinement of their patination — remain highly sought on the international antiques market.
This coffee table is a collector's piece of the first order — rare, beautiful and unmistakably French in its decorative sensibility. The combination of faux-bamboo bronze and églomisé mirror creates an object of shimmering, animated character that changes with the light throughout the day. It would be equally at home in a classically furnished drawing room, a chinoiserie-inspired interior, or a contemporary space that prizes the beauty of the great French bronzework tradition.
