PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This refined Art Déco coffee table by Maison Baguès, dating from the 1930s–1940s, is distinguished by a particularly elegant decorative conceit: bronze tassels affixed at each corner of the two glass shelves. This motif—borrowed from the vocabulary of upholstery and passementerie—was a characteristic touch of the Baguès atelier, which delighted in transposing the language of textile decoration into metalwork with results of great wit and refinement.

The table is constructed with two rectangular glass shelves within a brass frame, the vertical uprights joined by delicate stretchers. The glass surfaces, framed by the warm lustre of the polished brass, create a sense of lightness and transparency particularly prized in Art Déco interiors. The bronze tassels at each corner—cast with exceptional attention to detail—provide the distinctive decorative accent that elevates the piece from the functional to the artistic.

Maison Baguès, one of the foremost Parisian houses of luxury metalwork and lighting, was celebrated throughout the twentieth century for its ability to marry decorative invention with technical excellence. This coffee table, compact yet richly appointed, is a fine example of the house’s characteristic fusion of practicality and ornamental brilliance.
