PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This compelling coffee table is a characteristic work by Charles Dudouyt, one of the most original voices in French furniture design of the mid-twentieth century. The turned wooden elements — legs, stretchers, and structural members — display the bold, sculptural quality that distinguishes Dudouyt’s work from the refined neoclassicism of his contemporaries. Where Jansen and Baguès looked to classical antiquity for their formal vocabulary, Dudouyt drew inspiration from the vernacular traditions of French country furniture and the formal simplicity of non-Western art, creating pieces whose archaic energy and honest materiality feel entirely modern even today.
Charles Dudouyt (1885–1946) was a French interior decorator and furniture designer who developed a highly personal aesthetic based on turned and carved wood of primitive inspiration. Working in the tradition of the great French craftsmen while consciously rejecting the academicism of mainstream taste, he produced furniture, lighting, and decorative objects of great originality that have attracted growing critical attention since the rediscovery of his work in recent decades. His pieces — characteristically executed in oak, chestnut, or fruitwood with turned or carved structural elements — are today eagerly sought by collectors of mid-century French design, and examples appear regularly at major auction houses.
Presented in very good vintage condition, consistent with its age and provenance. W. 55 cm × D. 55 cm × H. 55.5 cm.
