PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This coffee table, dating to circa 1935, belongs to the distinguished tradition of French neoclassical furniture that flourished in Paris during the interwar period, when leading decorators and bronziers drew from the antique vocabulary of Greece and Rome. The rectangular top, a polished slab of marble, rests within a frame of cast and worked bronze and brass whose surfaces are animated by a programme of classical ornament: meander friezes, palmette borders and acanthus details articulate the apron and legs with scholarly precision.
The combination of bronze, brass and marble gives the table a material richness characteristic of the finest French craftsmanship of the period. The metalwork, executed by hand through casting and chasing, betrays the level of skill associated with the Parisian ateliers that supplied the great decorating houses of the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Tapering legs, terminating in sabots and joined by stretchers, complete a silhouette of rigorous neoclassical propriety.
Coffee tables combining marble, bronze and brass with a coherent decorative programme represent the summit of French neoclassical production between the wars. This example retains excellent patina to both the metalwork and the marble, and would serve equally well as a centrepiece in a traditional interior or as a counterpoint in a more contemporary setting.
