PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
An inventive and visually distinctive example of French mid-century rattan craftsmanship, this coffee table takes its name from the so-called “trampoline” form — a large circular rattan hoop whose lower edge is hung with a continuous fringe of individual rattan loops, creating a decorative apron that vibrates with light and shadow. Set within and above this circular frame, a square wooden panel — its corners just touching the inner circumference of the hoop — provides the actual tabletop surface, its flat, warm-toned wood veneer contrasting handsomely with the intricate organic texture of the surrounding rattan. The interplay between the geometry of the square top and the circularity of the frame is a quietly sophisticated piece of design thinking.
The base consists of four bundled rattan legs arranged in a wide, outward splay, their angle matching the generous diameter of the circular frame to create a stable, visually open structure. Rattan binding at the leg joints and at the junction of the legs with the hoop adds both structural integrity and the decorative punctuation typical of the finest French rattan atelier work of the period. The overall silhouette has a vivacious, spider-like quality well suited to the informal, nature-inspired interiors favored in France during the 1950s.
At 70 cm in diameter and 56 cm in height, this is a versatile table that functions as a coffee table in a sitting area or as a side table alongside seating. Its unusual form and generous scale make it a strong accent piece that rewards close examination of its construction.
In good vintage condition, with age-appropriate patina to the rattan and the wooden top. A singular and collectible piece of post-war French decorative arts.
