PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

A wholly exceptional and visually arresting coffee table in the finest tradition of French mid-century decorative arts, this piece unites a boldly graphic ceramic tile top with a refined black lacquered iron base in an object that is as much a work of applied art as it is a piece of furniture. The rectangular top is composed of hand-painted ceramic tiles forming a continuous underwater panorama: against a deep midnight blue ground, stylized fish in vivid green, yellow, and turquoise glide through swirling white lines suggestive of ocean currents, while a brilliantly red coral tree rises at one end among green seaweed fronds, all executed with the confident, expressive brushwork of a trained ceramicist working in the tradition of French mid-century decorative tilework.

The iron base is equally well-considered: four slender black lacquered legs support the tiled surface, while at each short end a large circular ring — a motif strongly associated with the work of Jacques Adnet and his collaborators — serves as both a structural brace and a decorative signature. Adnet, who directed the Compagnie des Arts Français from 1928 and later established his own atelier, was celebrated precisely for this integration of wrought metalwork with ceramic, leather, and glass surfaces, and this table belongs squarely within that creative milieu even if produced by one of the many skilled workshops operating in his manner.

At 80 cm wide, 48 cm deep, and 54 cm in height, the table is proportioned for use as a side or end table beside seating, or as a central accent piece in a smaller room. The ceramic top offers a practical, wipeable surface while retaining all the visual exuberance of a gallery work.

An outstanding and unusual piece in excellent condition, with the ceramic tiles intact and vibrant. Suitable for the collector of French mid-century applied arts as much as for the discerning decorator.
