PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The combination of chrome and brass in a single frame — one metal cool and reflective, the other warm and golden — was one of the most sophisticated material gestures available to French furniture designers of the 1970s, and it is this gesture that animates this coffee table. A continuous brass band is inlaid along the centre of every structural member of the chrome frame, creating a bichrome composition that introduces warmth and visual complexity into what might otherwise have been a straightforwardly modernist object.
The form itself is impeccably resolved: two rectangular tiers of clear glass, the upper as the working surface and the lower as a display shelf, are held within a chrome frame of generous section. The proportions are classical for the type — long and low, designed to be the centrepiece of a sofa grouping rather than an accent piece. The four legs, extending from the corners at a slight angle, give the table a sense of elegant solidity.
The quality of the construction is high throughout: the chrome is polished to a mirror finish, the brass inlay is even and continuous, and the glass surfaces are of substantial gauge. This combination of materials and execution places the table firmly within the upper register of French 1970s production, in the company of pieces by the leading ateliers of the period.
A distinguished coffee table for a living room or salon of any period or style.
