PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This slender console table exemplifies the refined aesthetic of French decorative arts in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The frame is finished in a deep gun metal patina — a characteristic dark grey-black metallic treatment that was particularly favoured by the most accomplished French ateliers of the period. The top is a slab of richly veined travertine, its warm ivory and caramel tones providing an elegant counterpoint to the cool darkness of the metal beneath. The whole composition achieves a refined balance between austerity and luxury that defined the best French interiors of the era.

The console belongs to the broader tradition of French Mid-Century design, a moment when craftsmen were experimenting with industrial materials and finishes while maintaining the rigorous proportions inherited from classical cabinetmaking. The gun metal finish — achieved through a controlled patination process applied to steel or brass — became a hallmark of Parisian interior decoration during this era, favoured by decorators working for the most discerning clientele. The pairing of this finish with travertine, a stone used in monumental architecture since antiquity, reflects the period’s fascination with the dialogue between raw material and refined craft.

Presented in very good vintage condition, consistent with its age and provenance. W. 145.5 cm × D. 42 cm × H. 76 cm.
