PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This commanding console illustrates a pivotal moment in French decorative design — the early 1970s, when Parisian designers embraced industrial materials, particularly chrome and high-gloss black lacquer, as the expressive tools of a new luxury aesthetic. The piece is constructed around a polished chrome frame of great structural clarity, its geometry strictly rectilinear, supporting a thick slab of black lacquered wood whose deep, matte surface absorbs light with an almost sculptural quality. The sharp juxtaposition of reflective chrome and absorptive black lacquer is one of the defining visual languages of the period.
Chrome became a preferred material in French luxury furniture from the 1960s onwards, embraced by leading design houses for its visual modernity and reflective quality. The combination of chrome with black lacquer was particularly favoured in the production of console tables, where the formal demands of the piece — a long, narrow, wall-facing surface — lent itself naturally to an architectural vocabulary. This console, with its generous length of over 110 cm and slender 30 cm depth, exemplifies this formal type: conceived to line a corridor, entrance hall, or salon wall with maximum decorative impact and minimum spatial occupation.
The piece belongs to the French Mid-Century Modern tradition, a period now commanding growing collector attention as the major Paris auction houses increasingly recognise the quality and significance of French design production of the 1970s. The original chrome finish and black lacquer top present beautifully in both period and contemporary settings.
