PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Jacques Adnet’s transformative vision for the French decorative interior centred on the disciplined use of leather — smooth, saddle-stitched, and invariably black — applied with architectural precision to furniture and objects of everyday use. This desk basket belongs to that tradition: a tapered square form sheathed entirely in smooth black leather, its four vertical edges finished with the characteristic tight saddle stitching that became Adnet’s unmistakable signature.

The form is masterfully resolved. The basket widens from its relatively narrow base to a generous square opening at the top, creating a silhouette that is both functional and rigorously elegant. The black leather surface has developed a fine patina over seven decades, deepening the already severe palette into something rich and complex. The saddle stitching — running as a continuous thread along every corner — provides structural reinforcement while adding a note of artisanal refinement.

Adnet directed the Compagnie des Arts Français from 1928 to 1959, during which time his leather-wrapped designs set the standard for the luxury French desk accessory. This basket, made in his circle and spirit, exhibits all the hallmarks of that output: the uncompromising use of black, the preference for geometric forms, and the elevation of leather craft to a level of architectural seriousness.

A superb desk or library accessory, and a piece that would sit equally well in a mid-century interior or as a singular accent in a more contemporary space.
