PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This exceptional desk set brings together three exquisitely coordinated pieces in dark green saddle-stitched leather and brass — the defining vocabulary of Jacques Adnet, the great French decorator and designer whose desk accessories became emblems of post-war Parisian interior elegance. The set comprises a desk lamp with a twisted barley-twist brass stem and a circular dark green leather shade and base, a letter rack in dark green leather with three brass wire dividers, and a pen tray with a dark green leather surround and a faceted glass insert. Together they form a complete, self-sufficient desk ensemble of exceptional coherence and beauty.
Jacques Adnet (1900–1984) was among the most accomplished and influential designers of 20th-century France. Trained at the École des arts décoratifs, he rose to become director of the Compagnie des Arts Français — the prestigious decorating firm founded by Maurice Marinot — and later established his own independent practice. His signature was an aristocratic restraint: the finest leathers, the most carefully proportioned brass fittings, and a disciplined avoidance of unnecessary ornament. His desk sets, lamps, and accessories were sought by the leading professionals, diplomats, and collectors of his day, and they remain among the most desirable objects in French mid-century design.
The lamp in this set is particularly distinguished: the twisted brass stem — a characteristic Adnet motif — rises from the circular leather base with elegant authority, while the dark shade casts a warm, directed light ideal for reading and writing. The combination of the three pieces on a single desk creates a unified aesthetic statement of considerable power, the consistent palette of dark green and brass providing visual coherence while each object retains its individual character.
A rare and complete example of the French mid-century desk ensemble in the Adnet tradition, in excellent vintage condition throughout. Overall dimensions: W. 35 × D. 35 × H. 43 cm.
