PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This elegant drop-front secretary desk exemplifies the refined functionalism that characterised the best French furniture production of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Veneered throughout in luminous sycamore — a wood beloved by French ébénistes of the postwar era for its fine grain and warm honey tonality — the piece combines practical utility with a clean architectural presence that has lost none of its appeal.

The upper body is arranged around a fall-front writing flap which, when lowered, reveals an organised interior of four small drawers — an arrangement that invites correspondence, reading, and the ordering of personal papers. When closed, the sloping front presents a smooth, unbroken surface, rendering the piece as much a sculptural object as a functional one. The lower section provides additional storage in the form of three generous full-width drawers, their fronts accented by elegant bronze handles that introduce a note of warm metallic contrast.

The whole rests on slender tapered legs that lift the mass of the piece and give it the airiness characteristic of French modernist design of the period. This formal vocabulary — sycamore veneers, tapered legs, bronze hardware — aligns the piece with the tradition of distinguished French workshops active in the post-war decades, producing furniture of enduring quality for a sophisticated Parisian clientele.

In very good vintage condition, the sycamore retains its warm natural colour with the pleasing patina of age. A versatile and handsome piece that functions equally well as a writing desk and as a principal storage element in a bedroom or study.
