PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This distinguished pair of side tables combines the refined neoclassical metalwork of Maison Baguès with the luxurious effect of églomisé mirror tops. The brass frames are elaborately cast with classical ornament — acanthus capitals, fluted columns, and hoof feet — while the tops are finished with mirror glass treated to achieve a warm, antiqued surface that gives an impression of depth and age. The effect of the églomisé mirror in the context of polished brass is characteristic of the most sophisticated French interior schemes of the 1930s and 1940s, combining the reflectivity of mirror with the organic warmth of aged glass in a way that gives the pieces an unusual presence in any room.

The technique of églomisure — the application of gold leaf or other metallic backing to glass, or in this context the production of deliberately antiqued mirror surfaces — was a speciality of Parisian decorative arts workshops during the interwar period, employed extensively by the leading upholsterers and decorators to add a quality of mystery and depth to furniture surfaces. Maison Baguès, with their unparalleled mastery of gilded and silvered metalwork, were among the most accomplished practitioners of this kind of luxurious material combination. Pairs of side tables of this form and quality are relatively rare survivals from the period.

Presented in very good vintage condition, consistent with their age and provenance. W. 65.5 cm × D. 26 cm × H. 55.5 cm each.
