PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The tending of the domestic fire is one of the oldest and most ritualised acts of household life, and the tools devised for this purpose have, in the finest households, always been accorded the same decorative attention as any other element of the interior. The poker, the brush, the tongs, and the shovel — the four instruments of the nécessaire de feu — are handled daily, displayed constantly, and exposed permanently to the gaze of guests; it is no wonder that the great decorative arts traditions of Europe invested such creative energy in their design.
This distinguished set, Italian work of circa 1970, exemplifies the Italian approach to the functional object: the conviction that utility and beauty are not in competition but in alliance, and that the everyday object, precisely because of its daily presence, deserves the most careful formal resolution. The tools are executed in polished brass of high quality, each piece presenting a handle of clean modernist form. The stand on which they rest — 68 centimetres tall, 22 centimetres wide, and 15 centimetres deep — is proportioned as a piece of furniture in miniature: slender, architectural, self-sufficient.
At 68 centimetres, the stand is tall enough to sit beside a fireplace of generous proportions without appearing overwhelmed, yet calibrated to remain in proportion with the hearth opening rather than competing with it. This careful management of scale is one of the hallmarks of sophisticated Italian design of this period, when the mastery of proportion was considered as fundamental a skill as mastery of material or surface.
Presented in very good condition consistent with its age, with the brass retaining a warm, natural patina, this modernist fireplace tool set would bring a note of considered Italian craftsmanship to any hearth. Sold as a complete set with stand. Dimensions: 22 × 15 × 68 cm.
