PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This elegant fireplace companion set demonstrates the characteristic refinement of the French neoclassical revival of the postwar decades, here given particular distinction by the large fleur-de-lys finial that crowns the central stand with commanding heraldic presence. The stand is executed in black lacquered metal, its dark surface providing a dramatic foil for the polished brass accents that punctuate the handles of each tool. At seventy-nine and a half centimetres tall, the set presents a strong vertical silhouette that reads as a decorative statement in its own right even when not in active use.

The pairing of black lacquer and polished brass is one of the most consistently deployed material combinations in French decorative metalwork from the 1950s through the 1970s, drawing on a tradition that reaches back to the black-painted ironwork with gilded accents of the Empire and Restoration periods. Here the combination is given specific heraldic charge by the fleur-de-lys finial — the ancient emblem of French royalty and civic identity, which never entirely disappeared from the French decorative vocabulary and returned with renewed prominence in the neoclassical revival that characterised so much of postwar French interior design.

The tools — typically a brush, poker, shovel, and tongs — are presented on a circular black lacquered base, their black handles and brass accents forming a coherent ensemble with the stand. The proportions are well considered: the compact footprint of twenty and a half centimetres in both width and depth ensures the set occupies minimal floor space, while the height of the fleur-de-lys standard ensures that it reads clearly from across the room.

An assured and handsome companion set in excellent condition, with the black lacquer intact and even and the brass elements warm and consistent in colour. It would add a note of disciplined French elegance to any traditional or transitional interior.
