PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A slender cage of vertical black lacquered bars, closed at the top by an oval ring handle and at the base by a square foot, forms the architectural centrepiece of this modernist fireplace companion set. The tools — poker, tongs, shovel, and brush — are housed within the cage, their brass handles visible through the grid of bars, the warm gold of the metal providing a deliberate chromatic accent against the matte black of the structure.
The ring handle at the apex of the stand is a particularly refined element, serving both a practical function — allowing the entire set to be carried from room to room — and a formal one, its oval silhouette capping the vertical composition with a satisfying geometric conclusion. The cage as a structural and decorative form was a recurring motif in French design of the 1960s and 1970s, applied across furniture, lighting, and accessories with equal inventiveness.
The contrast between the black lacquered ironwork and the polished brass handles of the tools is characteristic of the chromatic sophistication sought by French designers of this period, who frequently played the warmth of non-ferrous metals against the austerity of lacquered or enamelled iron. The present set, with its distinctive carrying handle and well-resolved proportions, is a particularly coherent expression of this approach.
